We are pleased to announce that Essex Tech’s NightHawks Adult Education program will continue to offer new Career Technical Institute (CTI) courses as well as Electrical and Plumbing Licensure classes.
Superintendent Riccio stated, “Over the past four years, the demand for workforce training has significantly increased on the North Shore. As tradespeople are aging out of the industry, vocational schools must be prepared to train these future workers who can acquire the skills necessary to enter the pipeline with significant earning potential. We are, once again, appreciative to Gov. Baker and his Skills Cabinet who continue to see the value for providing these opportunities through the CTI initiative.”
The CTI courses, funded through the Baker-Polito Administration’s Career Technical Institute initiative, will allow students to engage in industry training, credentialing, and job placement assistance.
Through the NightHawks program, adult learners develop proficiency and complete certifications that set them apart from other job candidates. NightHawks graduate Adam Bain, of Melrose, heard about the Essex Tech program from his family members.
“I chose Essex Tech because my father and brother took the NightHawks Advanced Manufacturing classes there and both found great jobs in the fields they chose,” said Bain.
Bain’s training in Essex Tech’s NightHawks Adult Education Program allowed him to learn basic skills, earn credentials and develop a passion for welding.
After completing the program, Bain landed his first industry job with Iron Workers Local 7. One of his first jobs was working at Fenway Park. Now, he is working at Gillette Stadium.
Bain acknowledges he would not be the welder he is today without Essex Tech, and is one of a small percentage of welders certified in both Stick Welding and Flux Cored Arc Welding.
“The practice and hands-on experience I got from the class truly made me a better welder,” Bain said.
“Through our partnerships on these programs with the MassHire North Shore Career Center, we have substantially increased our employer engagement, often resulting in multiple job offers for our NightHawks students,” said Bonnie Carr, Director of Workforce Development at Essex Tech.
Hunter Caron, a 2016 graduate of Beverly High School, completed Essex Tech’s NightHawks automotive course last year. “By the end of the class, I had 13 different dealerships and small shops that wanted me to put in an application. Thirteen of them,” said Caron.
Caron and another classmate went to work as technicians with BMW of Peabody. That he was hired directly out of the course by a high-end dealership, he said, was an indication of the demand.
“We’re passionate about vocational education and understand the opportunity this type of industry training can provide for adults, their families, companies, and within our communities. We are fortunate to have the facility to provide the training and have secured the resources for these opportunities to continue,” Carr said.
