Students, Families, Employees, and Community Members were all invited to participate in a Superintendent-Director Survey. The goal of the survey was to develop selection criteria and a profile for the candidate search.

The Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School Committee has hired Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) to assist in the recruitment and selection process for a new Superintendent-Director to replace current Superintendent-Director William Lupini, who will be retiring in August 2018.

The School Committee values input from families and we need to hear from you. You are an important partner as we move forward to make this important decision.

In order to learn more about your expectations, we are asking for your feedback via a survey that is posted on our school website and at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JQCQTFR.  The survey seeks to attain opinion about the desired criteria and attributes of a new Superintendent-Director and is administered to ensure confidentiality in responses. The survey is available until 12:00 PM on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, and the results of the survey will be shared and discussed at our school committee meeting scheduled on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at 7:00 PM.

Search Selection Criteria 

The criteria below for the next Superintendent-Director candidates were selected and voted on by the school committee on Thursday, March 15, 2018.

  1. Experience with school safety, culture, and climate;
  2. Understands Vocational and Agricultural Education;
  3. Success in improving and maintaining high academic performance;
  4. Experience with staff relations and evaluation. Understands and recognizes good teaching;
  5. Success in development and implementation of the budget;
  6. Education leadership skills including strong organizational skills, successful administrative experience, and visibility in the schools and community;

Superintendent-Director Search Update 3/26/2018

Dear Parents, Staff and Community Members,

The Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School Committee is pleased to announce we have one internal candidate for the Superintendent-Director position. Dr. Heidi Riccio will be interviewed this coming Thursday evening at our scheduled meeting on March 29, 2018, beginning at 6:00 P.M.

Dr. Heidi Riccio is currently the Director of Career and Technical Education and has been employed at the Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School since July 1, 2017.  The following was included in her announcement to the Committee last May:

“Dr. Riccio began her career in the hospitality industry as a sales manager for the Marriott Corporation. In 1997, she was hired to teach hospitality at Greater Lawrence Technical School and, over the years, was given the opportunity to be in a variety of leadership roles including department chairperson, academy supervisor, and CTE Director. In 2013, she became the Principal/Director of Medford Vocational Technical High School. While there, Heidi opened nine (9) new Chapter 74 programs, wrote over $1M in successful competitive grant funding applications, and worked collaboratively with the comprehensive high school to bring rigorous academic courses to vocational school students and offer CTE courses to traditional high school students. During her time in Medford, Heidi has been actively involved in community-based projects, brought back adult education programming, doubled enrollment for incoming ninth grade students, and strengthened a partnership with Everett to provide vocational opportunities to their high school students. Heidi holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johnson & Wales University, a Master of Education degree from Fitchburg State University, a CAGS from Salem State University, and a Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.”

Important Update Regarding Superintendent-Director Search 3/30/2018

Memo

Dear Families, Students, and Staff,

The Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School (ENSATS) Committee has initiated a search for the next Superintendent-Director and has contracted with the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) to lead the process. We began the process in March by receiving input from the community via a survey and a focus group which developed our desired criteria and attributes of a candidate. After receiving only one internal candidate application, the Committee has decided to advertise to external candidates to receive additional applications.

To assist us in the next steps of this process, the School Committee is looking for 9 volunteers to serve on the Superintendent-Director Search Committee.  The Search Committee will be responsible for narrowing the semi-finalists field of 10-12 candidates to 3-5 finalists to present to the full School Committee for final interviews.

The School Committee is requesting the following groups be represented on the Search Committee: 3 members of the School Committee, 1 ENSATS School Administrator, 3 teachers, 1 parent and 1 student.

The elected Search Committee volunteers are expected to commit to the interview schedule and timeline listed below.  It is important that all candidates are interviewed by the exact same group, therefore you must be able to attend all of the sessions.

April 27, 2018      Deadline for submitting applications to MASC

April 30, 2018      MASC screens completed applications. Screening process identifies requested a number of (8-10) candidates. Depending upon the number of applicants.

May 2, 2018       School Committee defines the role and charges Search Committee

May 2, 2018       MASC conducts a training session with Search Committee and reviews interview schedule

May 7-10, 2018   Candidate interviews – Search Committee.  All interviews will be held in the evening beginning at 6:00 pm and end no later than 9:30 pm.

Interviews will last for 1 hour with a 15-minute break between interviews.

May 09, 2018    Search Committee nominates finalists. The school committee requests no less than 3 and no more than 5.

May 10 2018    The Search Committee present list of finalists to the School Committee. Search Committee is discharged.

Superintendent-Director Search Update 5/15/2018

We are pleased to share with you some important updates regarding the School Committee’s Superintendent-Director Search.

Candidate Updates
On Thursday, May 10, 2018, the Superintendent-Director Search Committee presented two outside finalists in addition to the one internal candidate for the Superintendent-Director position. We are pleased to announce the finalists: Christopher Cummings, Leo DeSimone Jr., and Heidi T. Riccio, Ed.D. Please read additional information regarding the finalists below:

Christopher Cummings has been president of St. Peter-Marian Junior/Senior High School since 2016. He has also served as director of career technical education for the Waltham Public Schools and assistant superintendent/principal at Blackstone Valley Regional Technical High School. Mr. Cummings began his educational career as a Social Studies Teacher in 2000.

Mr. Cummings has master’s degrees in education administration and history from Providence College and a bachelor’s degree in history/secondary education from Hofstra University.

Leo DeSimone Jr. is the principal/director of career technical education at Somerville High School’s Center for Career and Technical Education and has also served as acting headmaster at Somerville High School since 2017. He is also a graduate studies adjunct professor at Fitchburg State University. Mr. DeSimone previously worked as associate principal and director of career and technical education at Weymouth High School and vocational coordinator at Minuteman Regional High School. Mr. DeSimone began his career in education as an Automotive Technology instructor at Minuteman Regional High School in 1989.

Mr. DeSimone has a master’s degree in occupational education from Fitchburg State University and a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts.

Heidi Riccio has been the director of career and technical education at Essex Tech since July 2017. She is the former principal/director of Medford Vocational Technical High School and also worked as director of career and technical education at Greater Lawrence Technical School. Dr. Riccio began her educational career as a Hospitality & Culinary Arts instructor at Greater Greater Lawrence Technical School in 1997.

Dr. Riccio has a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University; a CAGS in educational leadership from Salem State University, a master’s degree in occupational education from Fitchburg State University; and a bachelor’s degree in hospitality sales and meeting management from Johnson & Wales University.

Timeline Updates 
With the announcement of the candidates, there are a few updates to the timeline outlined below.

Site Visits: Each candidate will host two school committee members for a half-day-long site visit of each candidate’s current school district during which time they will be able to interact with students, staff, and community members.

Superintendent-Director Search Update 5/21/2018

Dear Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School District Community,

We are pleased to share with you some important updates regarding the School Committee’s Superintendent-Director Search.

Candidate Interviews 

The School Committee will interview all three candidates following the schedule below. Each candidate will spend the day in the district meeting with multiple groups such as teachers, office staff, and administration. At 5:00 pm there will be a candidate meet-and-greet in the Maple Street Bistro. This will allow community members, parents, students, and staff to meet the candidate and ask questions they may have. At 6:30 pm the School Committee will publically interview the candidate in the Library Media Center. Since Dr. Riccio was previously interviewed, Thursday evening she will only present a statement to the school committee and answer any questions that were not previously asked during her initial interview on March 29, 2018.

Superintendent-Director Appointment Announcement 6/4/2018

Dear Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School District Community,

On Thursday, May 31, 2018, the Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School Committee announced Dr. Heidi T. Riccio as our new Superintendent-Director. Dr. Riccio was selected for many reasons. These reasons include her passion for all aspects of education, her tenacious instructional expertise in CTE areas, and her commitment to provide vocational learning opportunities to students in our member communities. Additionally, Dr. Riccio has proven herself to be a successful leader in her role as a CTE director during her year-long tenure with the District.

Dr. Riccio comes to this position with high recommendations from current staff, faculty, and students. Additionally, Dr. Riccio is highly regarded by her previous mentoring Superintendents, community members, and colleagues where she worked tirelessly on numerous initiatives and projects.

Dr. Riccio began her career in the hospitality industry as a sales manager for the Marriott Corporation. Dr. Riccio advanced her career at GLTS earning a variety of leadership roles including department chairperson, academy supervisor, and CTE Director.

During her time here, Dr. Riccio not only has been successful in her role as a CTE director, but she also extended her leadership to improving many school programs such as safety, competitive grant funding, preparing to open new programs, advancements and enhancements to the curricula, efforts in school branding and social media outlets, and opening additional community programs such as the school farm stand.

With regard to Dr. Riccio’s passion for a long-term commitment to the District, she indicated “I am thankful to the District School Committee for their work and dedication to the search process. Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School offer great opportunities for students. I am happy to be a part of the team that will bring this District to its maximum potential.” Dr. Riccio further went on to say, “ The next few weeks will be spent developing a transition plan with Dr. Lupini and I am appreciative of his leadership. I look forward to working collaboratively with Shannon Donnelly, our interim principal, along with the entire leadership team and dedicated staff to achieve a common district-wide vision.”

Dr. Riccio has a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University, a CAGS in Educational Leadership from Salem State University, a Master’s degree in Occupational Education from Fitchburg State University; and a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Sales and Meeting Management from Johnson & Wales University. In addition, Heidi is a member of ASCD, MAVA, and ACTE.

Dr. Riccio is married with three children; Ceili, 21, Maggie, 18, and Meaghan, 15.  She grew up in Lawrence but has resided in Salisbury, MA since 1995.
